Sports Archives offers a unique look at the landscape of sports seasons throughout the calendar year, providing an accounting of major events and titles won each month with a focus on the sports and their leagues most exposed to North American fans. This site also serves as a repository for archiving titles won in an array of sports, easily accessible by category.

The six major North American team sports are covered: baseball | softball, basketball, football, hockey, lacrosse, and soccer. The top tier league or organization for both men and women is represented at the collegiate, professional, and international levels of each of these six sports, where applicable. Other major sports are covered at the top professional levels, and international levels where applicable.

A professional league is defined as one in which its players are paid. Liga MX and Major League Soccer (MLS) are considered equal as men's professional soccer leagues. From these two leagues, all three North American countries are represented in the clubs that qualify for the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Champions League. Other sports may have more than one professional league because each is the top tier of its own specialization, such as with car racing. Boxing is one sport that does not have a specific season and so the coverage is limited to major title fights.

International is defined as competition among nations and is denoted in blue. There may be more than one international organization representing a sport, such as the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for hockey. Men's soccer at the Olympic Games is not covered as it is limited to players under the age of 23. Women's soccer at the Olympic Games, however, has no restrictions and includes the best players in the world.
